The way that I ended up finding out about Koo Self Defense is a long story. I will cut it as short as possible. While in the Marine Corps, I met my future wife, Sandra. After the end of my tour I moved to Dayton, Ohio. I was there for a couple of years until Sandra was able to get orders to Rome, Georgia. I was able to get transferred to a branch in Kennesaw, Georgia.

My name is Jay Platt, and this the story of my involvement in the incredible Martial Art known as Koo Self Defense. Named after its founder and creator, it is undoubtedly unlike anything you've ever experienced. At least it was for me.

Dustin and I moved to Cartersville in September of 2000. My work schedule interferes with a lot of activities that require indefinite commitment. Dustin had taken a couple different forms of Karate when he was younger and had expressed a desire to participate in another program. In February of 2002, we dropped in and spoke with Master Koo. He explained his concept and the numerous classes offered each week. The first thing that appealed to me was the flexible schedule. You may attend as few or as many classes as you like. There is no pressure and you do not fall behind. As with anything, you get back what you put in.

This is my history of martial arts. Everything starts when I was thirteen years old. I was living in Mexico and I had too many problems on the streets, always getting into fights. When I was fifteen, I had a big problem with two boys who beat me up so bad that I never will forget. As years went by, I thought that the best martial arts school was Choi Kwang Do. Granted, I went through many instructors, but I continued to love the art. My goal was only to become a Black Belt.

I was a completely different person. My level of power and fitness, while still not that of an athlete, was one thousand percent of what it had been just a short time ago. I am a high school Special Education teacher and volleyball coach in Northwest Georgia. I started training at Koo Self Defense in April 2001. In March 2001, I was recovering from minor surgery when I had time to think about my health and fitness. I was 37 years old and 50 pounds overweight. My cholesterol was around 270. My doctor was going to increase my blood pressure medicine. I knew I had to do something. The only exercise program that has ever worked for me has been martial arts (in particular, judo). But the idea of driving 25+ miles one-way to Woodstock, GA or Rome, GA to get pounded into the mats by 20-year-old studs did not appeal to me.

I have been training in Master Koo's studio since October 1998 and 583 classes later (February 23, 2002) am as ever challenged as the first day I started. This is not to say that I don't build stamina with each session because you certainly do. My point is, his program is set up to where you have the opportunity to constantly strive to better yourself. The other benefits are just as he proclaims: increased flexibility, strength, firmness, and of course, less body fat. I have taken part in some type of exercise program for the greater part of my life. Some following trends, some out of boredom, and all with in mind to attain good physical condition. I aerobicized, walked, ran, stair-stepped, swam, practiced yoga, and weight trained. None of which have I reaped the physical and mental benefits as I have from Koo Self Defense. Frankly, Master Koo's program weaves many of the above excercise into his program.

In November 1987, I was diagnosed with Hodgkins Disease (Cancer of the Lymphatic System). After several surgeries and radiation therapy, I went into remission only for a few months. I then had a recurrence of the disease. This required many more surgeries and fourteen months of intensive Chemotherapy. In April of 1990, at the age of 31, my doctor told me that I was in remission again. My road to recovery has not been easy.
